چکیده

Two kinds of rifts separate perceptual researchers: theoretical and modality-specific. Theoretical rifts divide modality-specific communities, and modality-specific rifts divide theoretical communities. Each group seeks to understand perception, but each uses such different approaches that synthesis into one coherent theory has been impossible. Here, we examine the fissures and propose a theory of perceptual objecthood that closes them. Neuhoff (Chapter 1) discusses theoretical rifts in audition. He distinguishes the constructivist psychoacousticians, who use simple stimuli and well-controlled artificial environments to explore lower-level sensory processes, from the ecologists, who use real-world stimuli and less controlled environments to explore higher-level sensation, cognition, and behavior. Both groups have learned a great deal about auditory perception, but the lack of a unified framework makes it difficult for them to share their knowledge. The gap between types of modality specificity is even wider. Most researchers work within a modality-specific community which has its own theories and terminology. Gibson (1966) illustrated this problem with his description of a fire,

Gibson’s Theory of Perceptual Learning

This article describes the key ideas of the influential psychologist Eleanor J. Gibson, developed over 70 years of research with infants, children, adults, and a wide range of nonhuman species. Gibson’s ecological approach to perceptual learning and development describes how perception – extracting meaningful information from the environment to guide actions adaptively – improves with experienc...

Learning to Perceive or Perceiving to Learn?

Eleanor Jack Gibson built her theory of perceptual learning over a 70-year research career. She published her first paper on perceptual learning in 1932 (J. J. Gibson, Jack, & Raffel, 1932) and her last book in 2002 (E. J. Gibson, 2002). There is a clear thread from beginning to end, but she was not dogmatic in her ideas; her theories were always informed by data, and data collection was often ...

Proposing the simplified model for choosing the method of retrofitting in existing structures against fire risk

Background and objective: According to the necessities in the part 3 of National Building Regulations, design and construction of buildings should be in a way that the structures, according to the type of use, the size and the number of floors, resist long enough to fire, and prevent from destruction of buildings or from spread of fire to adjacent spaces or buildings. For this purpose, it is ne...

Simulation of Smoke Emission from Fires in High-Rise Buildings Using the 3D Model Generated from 2-Dimensional Cadastral Data

Having a 3-Dimensional model of high-rise buildings can be used in disaster management such as fire cases to reduce casualties. The fundamental dilemma in 3D building modeling is the unavailability of suitable data sources. However, available cadastral 2D maps could be used as low-cost and attainable resources for 3D building modeling. Smoke will be a great threat to people's health during a f...
